The advantage of two-line failsafe airbrakes is, should either line brake or become separated, or there is a part or full loss of pressure from either circuit on either the towing vehicle or the trailer, then the brakes will automatically apply on the trailer, likewise if the handbrake is applied, while the likes of electric brakes, electro over hydraulic or single line hydraulic brakes wont apply in many situations that two-line failsafe airbrakes would, as there are far to many partial failure modes with electric/electro over hydraulic brakes that will result in no brake application. The selection of small vehicles like pickups, SUV or light commercial vehicles with trailer airbrakes as an option are few and far between and is often a very expensive option to have fitted, because the base vehicle itself doesn't use full air braking or air-over-hydraulic braking, The reason 5th wheel/gooseneck trailers for pickups or other smaller vehicles (as opposed small and large lorry type) are seldom seen in Europe is because of the braking requirements in Europe, trailers under 3500kg gross weight then you must use dual line failsafe air brakes.Įlectric brakes, electro over hydraulic or single line hydraulic brakes are not permitted for high speed vehicles in Europe.
